Prescott Valley’s October 21 storm warnings: what a roof check can establish

At 7:49 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the National Weather Service in Flagstaff issued a tornado warning for a storm located over Prescott Valley. The warning was based on radar-indicated rotation and listed quarter-size hail. It was the third NWS warning to name the town that morning. At 2:58 a.m., NWS Flagstaff had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for a storm over Prescott Valley with 60 mph wind gusts and half-dollar-size hail, and at 7:32 a.m. a second severe thunderstorm warning named Prescott Valley among the locations in the path of half-dollar-size hail.

What the record shows, and what it does not

These warnings were radar-based. They describe what a storm was capable of, not what reached a specific street. KTAR reported that as of 1 p.m. that day, the Yavapai County tornado warnings had expired without any confirmed sightings. The NWS local storm report log for October 20 to 22 lists a public report of 1.5-inch hail about five miles west of Prescott Regional Airport, and Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office reports of downed trees on Walker Road near Lynx Lake. As of this writing, that log has no hail or wind report inside Prescott Valley itself.

So a warning over town is a good reason to look. It is not proof that any one roof was damaged. The rain is also not over yet: a Flood Watch for northern and central Arizona, including the Yavapai County zones, runs through 11 p.m. Thursday, October 22.

A short check once it is dry

  • From the ground, look for shingle granules collecting at downspout outlets, missing or creased shingles, and dents in gutters, vents, or the HVAC cabinet.
  • Check soft metals and painted surfaces facing the storm’s direction. Fresh dings there suggest hail reached your property.
  • Walk the yard for broken branches or debris that may have landed on the roof.
  • Inside, look at ceilings and the attic for new stains. Note the date and the room.
  • Take dated photos before anything is cleaned up or repaired.
  • Do not climb a wet roof, and stay clear of any downed lines.

Where an inspection helps

An inspector can tell the difference between fresh hail marks and older wear, and can write down exactly what was found at your address. If you are thinking about an insurance claim, our roof insurance claims page explains how the process usually works. Your policy and your insurer decide coverage.
