That is the same area where local news reported heavy damage the next day. FOX 10 reported many trees down near University and Gilbert roads, a knocked-down wall and large toppled trees at Grace United Methodist Church, and smashed car windows at a nearby apartment complex (FOX 10). Azfamily reported a bent carport at the Talise Apartments and stadium lights toppled at Quail Run Park, off Loop 202 and Greenfield Road (Azfamily).

What these reports do and do not tell you

A storm report is one observation at one place. It shows hail of that size fell there. It does not map where hail stopped, and a home a mile away may have had smaller hail or none. The reports are also marked preliminary. As of FOX 10’s October 21 report, the National Weather Service had not ruled whether the wind damage was a microburst.

Much of the damage reported near Gilbert and University was from wind and falling trees, not hail. That changes what to look for on a roof.

If you live near Gilbert and University

Stay away from downed lines. SRP reported lines down in this area. Treat any line on the ground or in a tree as live.

Look where branches hit. A limb that struck the roof can crack tile or break the deck under it, even after the limb is moved. Note where it landed and photograph it before cleanup.

Check the edges and ridge. Strong gusts tend to lift edge tiles, ridge caps and flashing first.

Check carports and patio covers. These were damaged nearby, and they often tie into the main roof.

Report trees in the street. The City of Mesa says an emergency response crew is always on duty to keep streets and rights-of-way clear after storms. Its transportation line is 480-644-2160, or 480-644-2262 after hours (City of Mesa).

For the general hail check, including tile, foam and shingle roofs and documenting damage, see our earlier post: how to check your roof after the October 20 to 21 storms.

Get a free roof inspection

If your home is near one of these reports, Apex Roofing Systems will inspect your roof for free and show you photos of what we find, including when nothing needs to be done. Request a free roof inspection or call (480) 808-ROOF (7663).
